Oil theft and vandalism in the Niger Delta region have been characterized as a catastrophe byi Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL.

The CEO of NNPCL expressed concern that the presence of more than 4,800 illicit connections on crude oil pipelines in the region could thwart federal government predictions.

While appearing before the Senate Committee on Appropriation in Abuja on Friday, Kyari delivered a speech.

.

The head of NNPCL noted that the security situation in the Niger-Delta would have a significant impact on the daily oil production.

When asked about the security situation in the Niger Delta, he described it as a catastrophe. There is no place on Earth where we can find that. Involving non-state actors as an extreme measure is out of the ordinary. However, we must act in an unusual manner.

More than 4,800 of your connections to our pipes are not authorized. Within each kilometer, there is an insertion. You won’t get your desired level of production regardless of how many insertions you seal.

People travel from all over the nation to engage in illicit refining in the Niger Delta. That’s why we enlist the help of natives to handle it.

“We shall manage this problem. We are making every effort to bring normality back. Massive harm is being done to both the environment and the communities that are hosting these events.
