In order to ensure that all Nigerians have access to food in the next year, the federal government has announced its strategy.
Approximately 31 million metric tonnes of grains are targeted for production in 2024, according to the FG’s Ministry of Agriculture.
The government justified the move by saying it was responding to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security emergency and the nationwide problem of food inflation.
While speaking at Wednesday’s opening session of the 6th annual Seed Connect Conference and Exhibition, Aliyu Abdullahi, minister of state for agriculture and food security, revealed that the federal government had set aside five crops for ambitious growth in 2024 and that farmers had received more than 300,000 worth of seeds.
Nigeria is projected to harvest over 31 million metric tons of grains in 2024 from its five main crops—rice, maize, wheat, soybeans, and sorghum—and its seed requirement is 312,555.69 metric tons (MT).
“The Ministry has laid out a number of important methods to address the issues with food security. These routes are simplified into three distinct but related sets of steps: immediate, medium, and distant.
“We flagged off the dry season farming of 2023/2024 in Jigawa State last Saturday, 25 November 2023, and one immediate priority is the certification of available planting material for some food security crops.”
