The Labour Party and its candidate, Darlington Nwokocha, had petitioned the Abuja-based Appeal Court to overturn its decision dismissing Nwokocha as the duly elected senator for Abia Central, but the court denied their request.

In addition, the court mandated that Nwokocha and his legal team pay five million naira to PDP and Senator Austin Akobundu.

The Abia Central zone senator, Austin Akobundu of the PDP, was legitimately elected in November after the appellate court disqualified Darlington Nwokocha of the LP.

Nwokocha and his party, however, have petitioned the Appeal Court to reconsider and overturn the order.

In response to the news on Friday, Abraham Amah, who is also the acting publicity secretary in Abia State and the vice chairman of the PDP, said that the rejection of the review requested by Darlington Nwokocha and the Labour Party was a triumph for the PDP, Senator Austin Akobundu, the citizens of Abia Central, the Nigerian judiciary, and democracy in general.
