On Saturday, stakeholders urged the Nigeria Association of Female Journalists (NAWOJ) with increasing activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) and harmful cultural practices affecting women and girls.
They made the announcement at the 11th triennial National Delegates Conference in Abuja, which had the topic “Unite! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls: The Role of the Media.”
Mrs. Ene Obi, former Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, emphasized the role of the media in combating GBV, harmful traditional practices, and other issues plaguing the country.
“The media has a significant and unwavering commitment to changing some of the perceptions about GBV.”
“We need to adhere to some reporting guidelines in reporting GBV; we should avoid issues of sensationalism and victims blaming, there is a lot we need to do to bring the messages out,” she went on to say.
Mr Chris Isiguzo, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), asked members to unite and focus on the organization’s rebuilding, peace, and progress.
“Bitterness, rancor, and acrimony can only produce retrogression.” Let us begin a new chapter marked by teamwork, understanding, and common aims.
“Our collective strength lies in unity and together we can overcome challenges and usher in an era of unprecedented success for NAWOJ,” he went on to say.
