According to Mrs. Edoema Irom, Cross River State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, 586 cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) were reported in the state between January and October.

This was said at a news conference she held on Saturday in Calabar to launch a 16-day protest against GBV.

The commissioner clarified that the data only reflected instances that were reported to authorities.

Irom said that in order to tackle the pandemic, the ministry was establishing reporting mechanisms for GBV cases in real time throughout the state’s 18 local government areas in collaboration with non-governmental organizations.

To solve this problem, we’ve established a Technical Working Group (TWG) made up of government officials and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives.

The TWG “meets quarterly to review efforts put in place to address the issue,” she said.

She said the 16-day campaign was launched to call attention to the issue and honor the sacrifices made by those who battled to abolish violence against women and girls around the world.
